Cleaning Your Front-Loading Washing Machine

December 13, 2018 by

Front-loading, high-efficiency washing machines can save you a lot of money and space. They use less water, and you can stack them together with dryers in smaller laundry rooms. However, one potential downside is that they do need to be cleaned more regularly than top-loading washing machines. Here’s why.

Front-Loading Washers & Mold Problems

Top-loaders can rely on gravity to keep water inside the drum while washing. Front-loading machines, on the other hand, have to use sealing gaskets around the door, instead. These gaskets are meant to keep the water in, of course, but that also means that they don’t dry out as well between cycles.

The build-up of soap and moisture in these gaskets can easily lead to a mold problem, so here are a few tips on how to keep your washing machine in squeaky-clean shape:

  • Use the “wash cycle” often. Use the this cleaning cycle on your machine to keep the tub from getting too dirty.
  • Use the right amount of detergent. Too much detergent can leave a film on the gasket, and mold loves it. Use the right amount (less than you think) to keep mold down.
  • Clean your gaskets with bleach or vinegar. Get into the crevices of your gaskets with a bleach or vinegar-baking soda blend to clean out existing mold, mildew, and soap film.
  • Keep the door open between washes. Leaving the door open between loads can help dry out the gaskets that are usually sealed up tight inside. This can keep moisture and mold down.

Mold doesn’t have to be a problem for your front-loading machine. For questions and advice, give All Brands Appliance Repair a call today!

Garbage Disposals: When a Repair Isn’t Good Enough

November 26, 2018 by

Garbage disposals are meant to last the average family about 8-15 years in total. If you keep up with regular maintenance you can reasonably expect your disposal to last at least this long. By always running water when you use it, keeping food particles small, and disposing of only soft foods, you can lengthen the lifespan of your disposal.

However, sometimes you’ll need to replace it before this much time has passed. Here at All Brands Appliance Repair, we want to help you make the best choice. Does your until need to be completely replaced, or is a simple repair a better option?

Each case is different. However, if your garbage disposal exhibits any of these signs, consider getting an estimate for a replacement:

  • Frequent resets. If you notice having to press the ‘reset’ button on your disposal more and more frequently, it’s probably time to get it replaced.
  • Unexplained clogs. Garbage disposals clog with larger loads sometimes, of course. But if it’s happening more often with smaller particles, it might mean the blades are getting dull.
  • Perpetual smells. Garbage disposals should not smell all the time. If your disposal smells even after attempts to clean it, consider replacement.
  • Internal leaks. If it’s not the water lines on the outside of the unit, there might be an internal crack.

If you’re unsure which option is right for you, don’t hesitate to contact All Brands Appliance Repair with questions. We’re here to help!

Trust an Appliance Expert to Diagnose Electric Stove Problems

August 24, 2018 by

Accurate diagnosis is the most important part of the repair process when one is faced with a malfunctioning electric stove. The reason for this is simple: if the true underlying cause of your stove’s malfunction remains a mystery, it is virtually impossible to apply an effective repair solution.

While a layperson may be able to make educated guesses as to the source of the issues, it’s best to leave the official diagnosis to a professional. Think of it this way: you could have the mailman diagnose you with the flu, but isn’t it a better idea to let a doctor do it? Trust your appliance to the people with the tools, techniques, education, and experience to accurately diagnose your troubled unit.

Common Electric Stove Maladies

Here is a list of common electric stove issues and their possible causes:

  • Coils are not heating up: This problem could be caused by a faulty internal ignition switch, a loose connection, or a foreign object blocking a vital connection. Connection issues could be the result of something heavy being dropped on the stove top, or something very cold being placed on a hot coil.
  • Sparks: There may be loose wires and connections, or coil damage created by excess weight or extreme temperatures. You may also be using a coil that is incompatible with your unit’s make or model.
  • Lights not turning in tandem with burners: This issue may be caused by a faulty control switch within the unit.
  • Can’t adjust temperature: This problem can often be traced to a faulty internal ignition switch.

The team at All Brands Appliance Repair has all the qualifications to accurately and swiftly diagnose the source of any and all electric stove issues. Don’t hesitate to call in a professional if you’re experiencing an issue listed above, or if you are in any other way unhappy with your stove’s performance.

Stay safe and enjoy full use of your stove with the help of our knowledgeable professionals!

Keep Your Refrigerator Running Long and Strong With Regular Maintenance

July 18, 2018 by

A refrigerator is a big purchase, so it makes sense to take good care of it so it lasts as long as possible. Your fridge also consumes a lot of energy. Therefore, it’s in your best interest to keep it working optimally so you’re not paying more than you need to in energy costs.

Performing a few basic maintenance tasks on a regular schedule will help you get the most out of your refrigerator in terms of longevity and energy efficiency. These small actions can lead to big savings in the long run! Read on to find out more.

Give Your Fridge Some Space

If your refrigerator condenser coils are on the back of your fridge, make sure you don’t push it all the way against the wall. Those coils are responsible for the cooling function of your fridge and freezer; it’s important to allow adequate airflow so they can do their job. An inch of space should do the trick! (Note: If your refrigerator model has the condenser coils on the bottom, no extra clearance at the back is needed.)

Clean Those Coils

As stated above, the condenser coils are responsible for the cooling action of your refrigerator and freezer. Over time, dust, pet hair, and other miscellaneous debris settle on the coils. Eventually, this will compromise coil performance, causing your fridge to work harder and use more energy to keep things cool. The fix? Clean the coils every six months with a long-handled bristle brush.

Gasket TLC

Another refrigerator workhorse is the gasket that goes around the doors of the fridge and freezer. This thin piece of rubber is what seals in the cool air and keeps the warm air out. However, gaskets may only last a few years due to the wear and tear they experience. Additionally, the airtight seal may be compromised if any debris gets stuck in the gasket track. So, keep your gaskets in tip-top shape for as long as possible by gently cleaning them every few months. At minimum, give them a good wipe-down with a universal cleaner at the same time you clean the condenser coils. If your gaskets are starting to loosen or tear, go ahead and replace them.

On average, your refrigerator should last between 14 and 17 years depending on make, model, and use. Taking care of it along the way will ensure that it works well and remains as energy efficient as possible for as long as possible.

For help with refrigerator repair or maintenance in Wilmington and the surrounding area, All Brands Appliance Repair is here for you! We have over 40 years of appliance repair experience and we are committed to making sure you get the best service possible every time you call.
