Keep Your Refrigerator Running Long and Strong With Regular Maintenance

July 5, 2018 by

A refrigerator is a big purchase, so it makes sense to take good care of it so it lasts as long as possible. Your fridge also consumes a lot of energy. Therefore, it’s in your best interest to keep it working optimally so you’re not paying more than you need to in energy costs.

Performing a few basic maintenance tasks on a regular schedule will help you get the most out of your refrigerator in terms of longevity and energy efficiency. These small actions can lead to big savings in the long run! Read on to find out more.

Give Your Fridge Some Space

If your refrigerator condenser coils are on the back of your fridge, make sure you don’t push it all the way against the wall. Those coils are responsible for the cooling function of your fridge and freezer; it’s important to allow adequate airflow so they can do their job. An inch of space should do the trick! (Note: If your refrigerator model has the condenser coils on the bottom, no extra clearance at the back is needed.)

Clean Those Coils

As stated above, the condenser coils are responsible for the cooling action of your refrigerator and freezer. Over time, dust, pet hair, and other miscellaneous debris settle on the coils. Eventually, this will compromise coil performance, causing your fridge to work harder and use more energy to keep things cool. The fix? Clean the coils every six months with a long-handled bristle brush.

Gasket TLC

Another refrigerator workhorse is the gasket that goes around the doors of the fridge and freezer. This thin piece of rubber is what seals in the cool air and keeps the warm air out. However, gaskets may only last a few years due to the wear and tear they experience. Additionally, the airtight seal may be compromised if any debris gets stuck in the gasket track. So, keep your gaskets in tip-top shape for as long as possible by gently cleaning them every few months. At minimum, give them a good wipe-down with a universal cleaner at the same time you clean the condenser coils. If your gaskets are starting to loosen or tear, go ahead and replace them.

On average, your refrigerator should last between 14 and 17 years depending on make, model, and use. Taking care of it along the way will ensure that it works well and remains as energy efficient as possible for as long as possible.

For help with refrigerator repair or maintenance in Wilmington and the surrounding area, All Brands Appliance Repair is here for you! We have over 40 years of appliance repair experience and we are committed to making sure you get the best service possible every time you call.

The Importance of Punctuality

June 6, 2018 by

Punctuality Matters

Have you ever scheduled an appointment with a hired contractor, only to end up waiting around and wondering when they’re going to show up? If you’ve dealt with a lack of punctuality before, you know how bothersome—and potentially costly—it is. At All Brands Appliance Repair, we take timeliness extremely seriously. We know how important it is to show up at the agreed-upon time, especially when it comes to major appliance repair.

Timeliness Saves Money

With almost 50 years of experience, our team at All Brands Appliance Repair understands that appliances are pivotal when it comes to keeping your household functioning smoothly. When a major repair is necessary, you can’t risk waiting around while the food in your fridge goes to waste or your dirty laundry piles up. A major appliance repair can require significant cost, both in the repair itself and in any potential damages caused by the broken appliance. For example, a leaking washing machine can cause serious water damage to your house; the longer that leak is able to flow, the more money you’ll have to spend fixing the damages. Every minute we can use to prevent that damage matters.

We’re Here to Serve You

Cost aside, we don’t think it’s right for our customers to have to wait on us. If you’ve entrusted us with this major repair, we should be providing you with the high-quality service you expect. We take pride in the fact that we are always on time, and we won’t keep our customers waiting. If you schedule a major repair with All Brands Appliance Repair, you can rest assured we will be as timely and efficient as possible. Call us for your repair today!

Follow These Important Dryer Safety Tips!

April 27, 2018 by

According to the National Fire Protection Association, approximately 14,630 household fires occur every year due to clothes dryers. This accounts for 9 deaths, 420 injuries, and $222 million in property damage. What’s more—a quarter of these fires are caused by built-up lint inside the dryers!

In other words, the clothes dryer in your home is a significant fire hazard. However, your risk of a dryer-related fire goes way down when you take certain precautions on a regular basis. In fact, it’s actually quite easy to prevent a clothes dryer fire in your home, as long as you do the following:

  • Keep your lint trap clean. Remove all accumulated lint from the screen after every load of laundry you dry.
  • Ditch the accordion-style duct. These are known to sag and trap lint in their folds. Replace it with a metal duct and use the shortest length possible to minimize sagging.
  • Keep your exhaust vent and ducts clear. Periodically check for blockages by making sure air is coming out of the exhaust vent. Occasionally use a vacuum attachment to clean it out. Also, during the winter, make sure snow is never blocking your vent outside.
  • Take extra care with fabrics soiled by flammable substances. Whenever you wash items that have been soiled by cooking oil, paint thinner, gasoline, cleaning agents, or similar substances, wash them more than once before putting them in the dryer. Doing this will minimize the amount of flammable substance remaining in the fabric before you put it in the dryer. Then, when you do dry the fabric, use the lowest heat setting possible—or better yet, hang it to dry.

By keeping these dryer safety tips in mind, you can significantly decrease your household fire risk!

Any questions? Don’t hesitate to reach out to the experts at All Brands Appliance Repair. We’re here to help homeowners in the Wilmington area with all your appliance needs!

Common Causes of a Leaking Washing Machine

March 28, 2018 by

Washing machine malfunctions always seem to happen at the worst times, don’t they? Exhausted, you put a load of towels in the wash before bed, and you wake up the next morning to a puddle of water in your laundry room. This is the last thing you need on a hectic weekday morning!

Unfortunately, there’s little we can do to completely prevent things like this from happening. However, try not to stress: a leaky washing machine doesn’t necessarily spell disaster. Your unit’s leak could be caused by one of several different issues. Whether it’s a quick DIY fix or a cheap replacement part, the solution may be more manageable than you think.

Common Causes of Washer Leaks:

Here are some of the most common causes of washing machine leaks:

  • Defective door seal
  • Faulty or loose connections, e.g.:
    • Worn-out fittings
    • Improperly connected hose
    • Loosely fitted water inlet valve
  • Worn-out drain hose
  • Cracked or worn-out valves
  • Too much detergent
  • Blocked soap dispenser

You can take a look at these parts of your washing machine pretty easily on your own. If anything appears loose, cracked, clogged, or worn out, it will need to be fixed. Whether that means simply tightening a hose connection or replacing a broken valve, the repair shouldn’t be too expensive or complicated.

What If It’s Something Else?

However, if you’ve examined these issues and still can’t find the cause of your leak, you’ll need to contact a professional washer repair technician for help. A professional will thoroughly troubleshoot your machine and find the root of the problem quickly and accurately. Then, they’ll make the necessary repairs.

All in all, it should be a relatively painless experience if you choose the right repairman for the job. For homeowners in the Wilmington area, All Brands Appliance Repair should be your first call!

Easy Tips for Keeping That Gas Oven Shiny Clean!

February 1, 2018 by

Keeping your gas oven clean is important, but it doesn’t need to eat up a huge chunk of your time. When performed in a routine and appropriate manner, gas oven maintenance is simple, safe, and straightforward—the way it should be! Check out these tips for keeping your oven cleaning hassle-free.

Keep Cool:

Before you begin to clean any part of your gas stove or oven, make sure it’s completely turned off and cooled.

Take Care:

Avoid using chemicals in and around your gas nozzles. Flammable chemicals and gas are a bad mix. If these nozzles become clogged with spilled food and other culinary byproducts, brush the area gently with a soft brush. Clear all debris to ensure that the gas burner continues to function reliably and appropriately.

Follow Manufacturer Recommendations:

The makes and models of gas cooking appliances vary greatly, especially over the span of time. Newer models call for different types of maintenance than many older models. Therefore, it is important to take note of recommended cleaning methods and to know which cleaning products should be avoided. Also, make sure you understand which parts of the appliance can safely be removed for cleaning. A layperson may cause damage to a unit by opening burner boxes and other appliance parts.

Don’t Slack on Professional Maintenance Needs:

Be sure to have your igniter serviced annually to avoid surprise issues. We rely on ovens and stoves to help us prepare our food; conversely, they rely on us to keep them in tip-top shape.

Regularly and correctly cleaning your oven, inside and out, will ensure it’s always looking and cooking its best. Keep your gas oven shiny and sleek, and make sure you stay on top of your appliance maintenance.

And, of course, call All Brands Appliance Repair if your oven maintenance needs turn into oven repair needs! We’re happy to provide appliance repair services to homeowners throughout the Wilmington area.
